+ Both before and after the Spanish invasion, steambathing has been a focus of Mesoamerican domestic life.  Household steambaths have been used for an array of hygienic, medicinal, and ritual activities, especially involving women in late stages of pregnancy, new mothers, and infants.  Steambathing is central to the development of individual personhood and to the formation of family and community identity.
